Mirgorod and Water

Mirgorod today – is a worldwide known health resort, which did not lose its reputation during long years of existence. People not only from Ukraine and post-Soviet republics, but from West Europe, USA come here, to this blessed land in order to cure, to drink “queen of water” – “Mirgorodska”, to breathe enough fresh air with odors of needle, meadow herbs, flowers, to walk through the birch grove, created in the 1934, on the territory of nature reserve of regional importance.

Among medical factors of health resort, a mineral water undoubtedly is on the first place, which by its properties is close to water of well-known in the world mineral springs of Baden-Baden, Aahen, Solennaja alpine resorts.

Mirgorod resort is situated in the very centre of Ukraine. It, you could say, has a geopolitical location, as it is situated in the middle- between Kyiv and Kharkiv. Who choose a Mirgorod resort, either capital inhabitants or residents of Kharkiv, won’t have time to feel even a slightest tiredness during the road, because super express “Kyiv-Kharkiv” in 2,5 hours will bring you with a comfort to the really peaceful town on the healing water.

In very centre of the town, only in 50 meters from the entrance to the resort territory, reconstructed and renovated hotel “Mirgorod” was opened in august 2006. Its 43 rooms already welcome guests and offer them comfort conditions for recreation and rest. First guests were embassy representatives from more then 20 countries of the world, who visited National Sorochinskiy Yarmarok in august 2006. Spacious rooms are equipped with TV-sets, telephones, air conditioners, furniture and furnishing; also have modern decoration of bathroom units, 24 hours hot water supply from own roof boiler room, and also sets of equipment for premises cleaning, modern laundry equipment – all these meet requirements of the present. This confirms a certificate of conformity of state certification system UkrSEPRO dated October, 6, 2006, according to which hotel “Mirgorod” was given a three stars category (***).

Sorochinskiy Yarmarok

Fair movement in Ukraine has a centuries-old history. Already in 40th of XIX century here were functioning 12 000 fairs, according 178 large and middle.

On the generous Poltava soil, from time immemorial, when peasants at the end of a summer had few free days, a loud and merry fairs were held: Illinskaya, Romenskaya, annual market in Goltove. Sorochinskaya wasn’t nor the largest nor the most famous. The village Velyki Sorochincy of Mirgorod region could have been little-known, as many other little villages of Poltava region, if only a great countryman Nikolay Vasilevich Gogol had made it famous for centuries. Future writer was born exactly here, in the house, which at the beginning of the XIX century belonged to M.Y. Trochymovskyj - the doctor, well-known on Mirgorodschina at that time. The exhibits of a Velyki Sorochincy literaly-memorial museum of N.V.Gogol remind of this. It was established in 1929, and a memorial to the writer in front of the museum.

A fair in Velyki Sorochincy – in the famous village on the river Psel, the Gogol native land, is held during the last weekends of August and gathers thousands of tourists. It is not common fairy, where you can buy or sell something, it is beautiful fairy holiday, a real performance under the open sky, when it is hard to understand where is an actor, where is a trader or spectator.

The main fair square – Zhabokritskaya square from the very dawn is filled with trays, trucks and carts. Here you can buy everything: and modern household appliances, and music instruments, and opishnyanski makitry, and unwieldy watermelons. And what a blouses and shirts, which are embroidered by masters from Reshetylivka, Dykanka and Poltava! In a moment after you have bought something – you see a new temptation – famous carpets and tapestries from Reshetylivka, which have high international awards.

How can you go by a giant heap of pots, earthenware pots, cocks and pigs! Painted and smart – they ask you to take them in the hands! “Oh my God! What a beautiful fair!” – Gogol was writing about the haggling. And all this beautiful sight is warmed up by exclamations: “Varenyky, mirgorodski varenyky!” and you are getting more and more hungry! “And who wants poltavski galushki?!”….

After you have tried everything you can have a rest, to listen to the kobza players’s or bandura players’ songs, or even to rush into the dance with “triple musicians” under the tambourine ringing. But the most important is – not to pass through a ceremonial president’s coming in full swing of a festive occasion with Gogol’s heros, played by artists from Poltava music drama theatre. A lot of games and competitions are arranged on the fair! It is possible to receive a title “freestyle wrestling supreme fair champion”, to win a prize for “the longest female braid” or for the best performance… Long after midnight music calms down, songs and laugh. But just after a sunrise – all begins again – music, fun and laugh. Several days a fair noise doesn’t quite down, and who was here just one time, hardly can forget it.

It is interesting to visit in Velyki Sorochynci a literary memorial museum of N.V. Gogol. Here you can see his memo book and so cold “traveling bag of perpetual traveler”, with which Gogol has traveled all over the Europe and made a trip to the Holy Sepulcher in Palestine.

If you visit a Sorochynci, by all means drop in at Transfiguration church dated 1732. It is famous for its unique iconostasis, which is 20 meters in width and 17 in height, in which hundred vivid canvases of XVII century are placed. In this church N.V. Gogol was christen.

To get to the Velyki Sorochynci is not difficult: by auto you can go through the Dykanka, Mirgorod, Opishnya, Gadyach. If you prefer railway transport or a bus – trains and buses run everyday with a stop in Mirgorod. Distance from Mirgorod to Sorochynci is 25 km. You can get there by bus or a taxi.
